'This job isn’t just about locking and unlocking doors'
If you think you have what it takes to guard the region's offenders - and also be a "positive role model" - a Northamptonshire jail is looking for new prison officers. Two prison officers at HMP Onley, Deepak Bola and Kevin Grace, are urging Northampton residents to join them in a role that keeps the public safe and helps offenders turn their backs on crime.
"At HMP Onley, we look to help prisoners by speaking with them and offering access to courses that help break any cycles of reoffending. I’ve been really pleased and proud of my personal progress in the role to date. You can go as far as you want if you put the effort in. Changes to pay mean the starting salary for prison officers is now 26% higher with new recruits taking home over £30,000. This exceeds the average salary in the West Midlands.
Kevin said: “One of the most important skills people can bring to the service is an ability to talk to people, negotiate and understand an individual’s needs. Matthew Tilt, Governor at HMP Onley added: “We have a fantastic team of staff at HMP Onley and they do incredible work every day. Prison officers play an essential role in making a positive impact in vulnerable people’s lives.
