North Texas took a 5-point lead on a second-chance putback and held off a furious Grand Canyon rally in the final two minutes to escape with the win Saturday, 60-58, in the Jerry Colangelo Classic at Footprint Center in Phoenix.
Abou Ousmane grabbed his own rebound off a miss and put it back to give UNT a 60-55 lead with 1:46 left. GCU's Ray Harrison followed by drawing a shooting foul and knocking down both free throws to bring the Lopes within three. Jovan Blacksher Jr. then stole a bad pass from Aaron Scott, drawing another foul on UNT, but missed the first of two free throws.
Both Josh Baker and Blacksher missed 3-pointers in the last minute that would have given GCU the lead. Harrison paced GCU with 23 points. The Lopes were missing production from Blacksher, who averages over 12 points a game, but provided just seven in 36 minutes on 1 of 9 shooting.
