President Trump sharply reduced the exercises, but that was not enough to keep the Pyongyang regime happy.
By Simon Denyer Simon Denyer Tokyo bureau chief covering Japan, North Korea and South Korea. Email Bio Follow March 7 at 9:12 AM TOKYO — President Trump has scaled back U.S. military exercises with South Korea, but that apparently was not enough to satisfy North Korea.
Justifying his latest decision to shrink exercises with South Korea, Trump focused on their cost, although officials have also acknowledged that maneuvers were suspended to allow room for diplomacy with North Korea. A South Korean K1A2 tank and a US M1A2 tank fired live rounds during a joint live firing drill at the Seungjin Fire Training Field in Pocheon, northeast of Seoul, on April 26, 2017. KCNA denounced the diminution of the exercises as merely a name change and said they were an attempt to ramp up war capabilities.
