North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is pictured wearing a face mask for the first time as the country announces a national COVID19 lockdown. Read more about this story:
We’ve seen what happens when Omicron whips through a population with low vaccination - just look at the fatalities in Hong Kong in its recent wave. But North Korea doesn’t appear to have any rate of vaccination at all.
It refused offers, from the COVAX initiative and from China, saying that the doses should be given to needier countries. It may well find itself in need. The Kim regime banked on its strict border controls keeping the virus at bay - the country has been sealed off from the rest of the world since early 2020.The only tool North Korea has available is lockdown, which it will be able to enforce strictly. And North Korea lacks the infrastructure for deliveries that Shanghai barely managed to maintain.According to the latest data from the World Health Organisation, 64,207 of North Korea's more than 24.
The country has so far shunned vaccines offered by the UN-backed COVAX distribution programme, suggesting no civilians may have been vaccinated, possibly because those have international monitoring requirements. A South Korea-based website that monitors activities in Pyongyang said this week that residents have been told to return home and remain indoors because of a"national problem" without offering details.
