Yellow Roof Foundation recently unveiled new Gonsalves Village affordable housing community in Pittsburg

Six families at risk of becoming homeless are resting a bit easier now after moving into their new affordable rental homes in Pittsburg.

, a charity founded by Dave and Lori Sanson, owners of DeNova Homes of Concord. They started the nonprofit four years ago to help “hardworking families who are experiencing hard times due to circumstances beyond their control,” they said. They worked with Pittsburg to purchase surplus land where they could build the village – three small houses and three accessory dwelling units – while volunteers helped furnish them.

That was the case for Strange, who has moved from place to place paying as much as $1,550 on rent as she tried to maintain a home for her two children and afford their schooling and other expenses. The 48-year-old single mother has never not worked, having been employed as a women’s basketball coach, a police officer, an educator and in other jobs over the years and is now seeking her full credential for general education teaching.
