Will the newly-minted world champion and American record holder go for another gold in the 4 x 100-meter relay final?
Jul 23, 2022He’s finished with his broadcast interviews after the first round of the men’s 200 meters at the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon. Next, he has to move down to the lower level of Hayward Field to talk to the print and internet reporters. He walks behind a series of screens—and he’s singing, laughing, and talking. Finally, he’s out into the open, where more reporters swarm him for sound bites. Lyles provides plenty.
The next day, on five hours of sleep, Lyles recounted the moment at an event set up for press by Adidas, Lyles’s longtime sponsor. “I made it to 25 years old today!” he wrote. “A mark that for African Americans is a big milestone. By this time in a Black man’s life we are either put in jail for life, killed in gang related events, or killed just for the color of our skin. So when I say glad I made it to 25 I mean it!!!”
His therapist is with him in Eugene, and he is open about that. He also has other key members of his team, including his 22-year-old sister, Abby, who is getting a masters degree in chemistry—as well as his mother, Keisha Bishop, who helps keep the Lyles operation organized and running on time. Just as she’s explaining this, an Adidas shoe expert comes by with a new pair of spikes, custom-made for Lyles. He places them in Bishop’s hands, and explains that they’re running low. Her son has been giving away too many pairs after races, so please, hold onto these for the rest of the season. In case of emergency.2022 World Athletics Championships ResultsHe has a good excuse for delegating some of the details to his mom. He is busy perfecting his start—every step of his race, really.
The U.S. men have struggled at recent championships with the relay. At the Olympics last year, they finished sixth in their prelim and didn’t advance to the final. In 2016 in Rio, they made the final, but bungled the first exchange and got disqualified. There was an outcry—the U.S. has the fastest sprinters, so why can’t they get this right?“Everybody who is on that relay is prepared and ready to run,” he said the night of his 200 record.
