This is likely what fans are reacting to, on top of the fact that Khan is one of India's biggest superstars. However, Khan likely has his hands full with other projects, including the upcoming action epic Jawan.
Despite these protestations, Singh could very well be the right person to drive the franchise forward into the future. Singh has starred in some of the highest-grossing Indian movies of all time, including Bajirao Mastani , Simmba , and Padmaavat . While those can't quite compete with the recent box office success of Shah Rukh Khan's Pathaan and his ability to draw in global audiences, Singh could still propel Don 3 into smash-hit status and begin a new branch of the franchise.
It is also the case that the character of Don has been successfully replaced in the past, when Khan initially took on the role. The character was first played by Amitabh Bachchan in the 1978 original, and there was likely similar trepidation to Khan taking over the role in the 2000s. It remains to be seen if Don 3 is a true success, but it could very well thrive despite some audiences' low expectations.
