Nicole strengthened to a hurricane Wednesday evening while making landfall on Grand Bahama Island in the Bahamas, before taking aim at the eastern coast of Florida later in the night
, according to the National Hurricane Center.
Nicole, which was a tropical storm as it approached the Bahamas, became a Category 1 hurricane, with winds of 75 miles an hour, the hurricane center said. A hurricane warning is in effect for parts of the northwestern Bahamas and a roughly 225-mile stretch of Florida’s coast from Boca Raton in the southeast to the border of Volusia and Flagler counties in the state’s northeast.
