The reigning MVP and company are starting their season in Colorado ... with the Denver Nuggets' permission.

As first-year Sixers coach Nick Nurse walked across the hardwood at Colorado State’s Moby Arena early Tuesday afternoon, not long after the news broke that’s basketball boycott was expected to end soon, this had suddenly become the most interesting question surrounding Day 1 of Philadelphia’s training camp. The Harden situation had been clarified, if only for a day, with the aggrieved star expected to take part in camp on Day No. 2 after missing the opening day.

To put it simply, Nurse’s motivations for picking Fort Collins were all based in his belief that this group was about to spend the next nine months competing for a championship. He wanted his new players to bond during this little getaway, much like they had during previoustraining camps in Vancouver, Victoria Island or Quebec City. He wanted them to get a break from the East Coast media crush, with only the die-hards among Sixers reporters, so to speak, making this long trek.

“Uh … maybe,” Nurse said. “I mean, they’re very good, and they have a good chance to be in the Finals.”When Nurse was hired to replace the fired Doc Rivers in late May, it was seen by some as an organizational olive branch of sorts being extended in Harden’s direction. It was an open secret that Harden no longer wanted to play for Rivers, and the choice to fire him while bringing in another championship coach was seen as a positive by both sides in advance of the free-agency period in July.

But to hear Nurse tell it, the Harden situation is merely the latest reminder that this basketball life isn’t always about, well, basketball. The coach’s job, as Nurse has learned so many times before on his play-caller journey that spans the better part of four decades and just as many countries, is to find a way to form the best possible basketball team despite any and all distractions that might ensue.
