Alliance councillor David Reid faced a seven month wait from reporting his symptoms for cancer treatment
A Co Antrim man says he is coming to terms with the changes to his everyday life as he recovers from major cancer surgery after a seven month wait for treatment.
David was first diagnosed with bowel cancer in 2019, which he says came completely out of the blue and as “a huge shock”. "After a few weeks, I had heard nothing so I called the GP and was told I could be waiting six months to be seen. That really floored me and I was constantly on edge worrying about my health.
“A few weeks later, I had a procedure to scrape my bladder, which confirmed that the cancer had returned.” “I had two MRIs because no one was available to administer the contrast agent for the first one so I was called back. I finally spoke to an oncologist about my second diagnosis for the first time last week, months after surgery.”“My bladder, rectum, prostate and most of my large bowel were removed so I now have two permanent stomas. It's a hugely life-changing operation and it has been an uphill struggle both mentally and physically.
David's recovery comes a year on from the publication of Northern Ireland's long-awaited cancer strategy after a decade of work involving input from charities, clinicians and patients. Initial investment of £2.3 million has led to the opening of two rapid diagnostic centres at Whiteabbey Hospital in Co Antrim and the South Tyrone Hospital in Dungannon while a review of teenager and young adult services is in its final stages.
