Public support for nurses taking industrial action has risen according to a poll by the Royal College of Nursing
which on Monday calls on the new Health Secretary to end the delay over NHS pay.
General secretary and chief executive of the RCN, Pat Cullen said nursing staff have been waiting more than three months for a pay award and that many cannot afford to keep waiting as theThe RCN is calling for an immediate “substantial” pay rise having threatened to strike if nurses are not awarded such an increase.but nurses are now asking for a rise 5 percentage points above inflation, which is 9 per cent at present, making a total of 14 per cent.
Ms Cullen said: “Lack of staff is putting patient care at risk. The pressure on nursing is unrelenting and now soaring inflation means staff are struggling to pay the bills and going to food banks. They are leaving the profession in their droves –is proving the final straw. After a decade of pay cuts by Government, nursing cannot afford to wait any more.
The YouGov poll also shows that four out of five people in England support a pay rise for nursing – with nearly two thirds of those favouring an increase of 5 per cent or above. Nearly eight in 10 people think there are too few nurses currently working in the NHS in England.more than a quarter of people in England are not confident that they or a loved one would receive a good standard of care from the NHS – including a quarter of those who voted for the current Government.
