The San Jose Sharks are mostly like to select either Matvei Michkov or Will Smith with their first pick in next week’s NHL Draft in Nashville – if the lion’s share of mock drafts can be believed.
“I think you’d want competitive skill and character,” Fitzgerald said. “Obviously character goes without saying, but competitive skill … you watch these playoff games, it’s a different kind of game than games one through 82. The teams who go win puck battles and make plays in small areas — that’s just drive and competitiveness and will.”
“Will has enough talent to be able to be an adequate defensive player. He’s never going to be Patrice Bergeron, he’s never going to be Logan Couture, for that matter,” Sportsnet’s draft expert, Sam Cosentino, told this newspaper. “He’s going to make his mark producing offense. Perhaps that leads the Sharks to seriously look at another Boston College-bound forward: Ryan Leonard.
A Massachusettes native, Leonard, 18, might play wing at BC if he remains on a line with Smith and Gabe Perreault, another Golden Eagles recruit expected to be taken in Wednesday’s first round. But he can also play center and would fit the bill as to what the Sharks want to add to their group – pushback.
