This NFL scouting combine, which kicks off this week in Indianapolis, remains an invaluable took for teams including the Arizona Cardinals

The Winter Olympics may have ended but the “Underwear Olympics,” otherwise known as the NFL scouting combine, kicks off its annual week-long showcase Tuesday at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

With advancements in technology, the abundant availability of college game film, larger scouting departments that make it possible to attend more games and Pro Days, not to mention more eyes scouring and devouring analytics, does the combine hold the same value it once did? Just because teams can see everything on tape and, as in the case of Keim and the Cardinals, have relied on FaceTime and Zoom more than ever lately to learn more about potential draft picks, there is merit in watching how a player responds in different on-field drill sessions, Jeremiah said.

That’s not to say Arizona won’t make an honest effort to try and re-sign Jones. At 32, however, it’s difficult to gauge exactly how much money it will take to bring him back. The Cardinals have until March 8 if they plan on placing the franchise tag on Jones, which would lock him up for the 2022 season. But that will come at a hefty price, considering he also was “franchised” back in 2017.

“You look at the beginning of the season starting 7-0, 10-2, being in a position where everything was going great, and then DeAndre Hopkins unfortunately gets injured and things started to really become a little more challenged at that point,” Bidwill said. “But I’m certainly more optimistic about where we’re going and the direction we’re going – much more optimistic, I should say – and excited about our future.

During a 2019 interview at the combine, he called the NFL’s annual event a critical part of the process for two mains reasons — to get the full medical reports on prospects and for the chance to interview them to get to know them as people, not just players.
