Updated: Jun. 10, 2024, 9:58 a.m.New York Giants star tight end and NFL Pro Bowler Darren Waller is retiring from the league after eight seasons, he announced on social media on Sunday.

Waller, 31, informed the Giants of his retirement after missing Organized Team Activity practices this offseason. “The fever starts to build, I start getting chills, stuff like that,” Waller said. “By the time I pulled into the parking garage at my condo, and get out of the car, I’m, like, shaking pretty violently, like uncontrollably.”After trying to rest in bed, Waller said he “couldn’t breathe” and was losing consciousness. He said he called 911 and spent more than three days in the hospital, where he was unable to stand up, use the bathroom or feed himself.

Waller, a former collegiate standout the Georgia Tech, was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the sixth round of the 2015 NFL Draft. He played two seasons for the Ravens in 2015 and 2016, but missed the 2017 NFL season after beingWaller was released by the Ravens in 2018 and signed with the then-Oakland Raiders. In 2019, the 6-foot-6 tight end made 90 receptions for 1,145 yards and three touchdowns in his breakout season for the Raiders.
