Both teams will now have an opportunity to possess the ball in overtime after owners approved a proposal put forward by Indianapolis and Philadelphia. The rule change will only apply to playoff games.
Josh Allen and the Bills offense were denied a chance to answer Kansas City in overtime of their AFC Divisional round loss.CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The NFL is changing its overtime rules for postseason games, a few months too late for Bills fans.
It comes, in part, in response to the classic Bills-Chiefs showdown in the AFC’s Divisional round which ended when Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes threw a touchdown pass to Travis Kelce on the opening possession of overtime, preventing the Bills offense and Josh Allen from responding.
Under the new rules, the Chiefs would have kicked off to the Bills after scoring in overtime. If the score is still tied after both teams have possessed the ball, the game moves to sudden death. Regular season overtime rules will remain unchanged. If the team taking possession first scores a touchdown, the game is over. If they kick a field goal or fail to score, the next score will win the game.
The proposal was one of two overtime changes suggested. The other, proposed by the Titans, would have forced a team to kickoff after scoring a touchdown on their opening possession unless they attempted and converted a two-point try.
