The show runs weekends through Aug. 6.The musical “Newsies” is presented by Summer Place Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and at 3 p.m. Sundays July 21 to Aug. 6 at Naperville Central High School. It is directed by Mike Frale of Carol Stream.“This has been one of my dream shows since it came out,” he said.
“Especially because you don’t see very often anymore so many men singing and dancing onstage,” he said. “That is something that intrigued me and made me go, ‘This would be a cool experience to have.’ Because that’s a different type of atmosphere than a lot of productions that are female-heavy. We do have a mix of male and female newsies, but the cast is still heavily male.”
“The newsies are fighting for a fair contract, fair wage — ironically, who knew it would be so timely with the Writers Guild of America strike going on,” he said. “The story focuses on a 17-year-old boy named Jack Kelly and he is the quote-unquote leader of the newsboys — and girls, in our version, but we just say newsies,” he said. “He’s an orphan, he lives on the street and as the plot progresses, Joseph Pulitzer, who runs The World newspaper, raises the cost for the newsies to get their newspapers. The newsies purchase the papers from the company and they sell the papers to the passersby on the street.
