A digital database of the handwritten 1950 census forms is now available to anyone who wants to search them. That includes at least 26 million Americans who might even be able to find their own names among the records.

The records are released by the National Archivesafter the census reference date, a moratorium for privacy set in 1952 and made law in 1978.

The country was less diverse. The census reported totals for “white” , “Negro” and a group of “other races” that included American Indians, “Japanese,” “Chinese” and “all others.”Current and following photo: Joe Rosenthal/San Francisco Chronicle/Gettyof households were people living alone, compared with 28% today. And two-thirds of people 14 and over were married, compared with 60% in 1940 and just half today.- Ask if the home had a television set.
