Auckland’s mayor Wayne Brown declared the state of emergency on Friday due to the extent of the ‘damage, displacement and disruption’ in the region. ‘There has been some speculation, I could have acted sooner, but I couldn’t have. This is a formal process, not to be taken lightly,’ he said during a press conference.‘And so I’ve listened to the professionals in the field.
