New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said he hoped that closing down schools and nonessential businesses in nine hot spot neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens would prevent the spread of Covid-19
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said Monday that his hope in closing down parts of the city where there are high percentages of people testing positive forSpeaking to CNN Monday morning, Mr. de Blasio said the transmission rate of Covid-19 in the majority of the city remains low, below 2%, outside of the roughly 20 neighborhoods in Brooklyn and Queens where there arePending approval from New York Gov.
“This is to make sure that this virus doesn’t spread more deeply in those communities and threaten lives, and that doesn’t spread to the rest of the city,” said Mr. de Blasio. “So, it’s a measure I think we have to take to contain the situation before it gets any worse.” The recent rise in cases was fueled by hot spots in nine ZIP Codes in southern Brooklyn and Queens which have seen more than a threefold increase in cases in the past several weeks. Rockland and Orange counties, which are outside New York City, have also seen surges in cases.
