According to the NHS, about 5,500 people are diagnosed with this type of cancer every year in England
A new treatment for an aggressive form of blood cancer is to be fast-tracked for NHS use, with hundreds of people expected to benefit. Glofitamab helps activate a patient’s immune system, making chemotherapy – which can have a number of debilitating side effects – not necessary.
The drug is administered intravenously through a drip and its active substance is an antibody that attaches to proteins found in B cells and in T cells, a type of white blood cell that can destroy cancer. By binding the proteins together, glofitamab acts as a bridge between T cells and cancer cells and encourages the immune system to destroy the disease.
“By bringing these cells together, the patient’s own immune system is activated and kills the cancer cell and so chemotherapy is not required. Patients don’t have the side effects of chemotherapy and often feel well on this outpatient-based treatment.” “Not only does it provide a potentially life-saving option for patients who may have not responded to CAR-T therapy, it is also an alternative for some CAR-T eligible patients who choose instead to have glofitamab closer to home.”
