After two weeks as Ibrox gaffer, Clement has already made up his mind on Jack Butland and wants to build his new-look team around the 30-year-old keeper. Butland's outstanding performance in the Europa League draw against Sparta Prague has convinced Clement of his qualities. Clement, who previously won titles with Simon Mignolet in goal, emphasizes the importance of a strong goalkeeper for success.
New boss Philippe Clement is still casting an eye over his Rangers’ squad and deciding who can do a job for him.
At old club Brugge he won two titles on the trot with Simon Mignolet in goal. The former Liverpool and Sunderland goalie was pivotal to Clement’s success and the Rangers boss can already see similarities between him and Butland. “Jack did that in the first half in Prague and will do it again in the future. He will also make mistakes – that is part of being a goalkeeper. But what I like most about him is his personality. He is a winner. Jack has a strong mindset and I like to have these characters in my dressing-room.
That would be a body blow to Ibrox fans who have already hailed the keeper as the perfect replacement for club legend Allan McGregor. Butland – who was on loan at Manchester United last term – has already made 41 saves this season in the Premiership and Europe. And Clement has warned off Rooney or other potential suitors, saying Butland is at Ibrox to stay.
Clement has to prove he can cope in that environment too. That was one of the questions club icon Graeme Souness had about the Belgian in the interview process that saw him replace Beale.
