Liverpool Council could monitor drivers through ANPR cameras if they linger too long in box junctions or misuse bus gates
New powers granted to Liverpool Council in a bid to tackle problem drivers have been met with a bizarre rant comparing them to George Orwell’s 1984.
A meeting of the authority’s cabinet was addressed by a member of the public who criticised the move, referencing the expansion of London’s ultra low emission zones and an IRA attack 30 years ago.READ MORE: Air ambulance lands after woman falls from bridge on M62 According to documents released by the council, enforcement of traffic restrictions will only be considered where it would help improve road safety, quality and accessibility of public transport, benefit the environment or manage the traffic network to ensure efficient movement of traffic and tackle congestion. Powers granted previously solely to London to enforce moving vehicle contraventions were extended to Liverpool.
Enforcement of moving traffic will be undertaken by a parking officer through CCTV or ANPR cameras. Traffic signs and road markings associated with highway restrictions will be reviewed and enhanced to make sure they are clear and visible.
