More than 4,100 people have signed an online petition calling for changes to Paternity leave.
A new online petition is calling for a change to parental leave rules for working fathers and second parents during the first year after the birth of a baby. Petition creator Jeremy Davies also wants to see a new Paternity Allowance introduced offering similar benefits provided to those on Maternity Leave.
It continues: “More than half of UK families struggle financially when fathers take paternity leave. Taking two weeks’ leave at the statutory rate costs an average earning father more than £1,000, and around 20% of fathers are ineligible.” Top Money Stories Today How Paternity leave works People can choose to take either 1 or 2 weeks Paternity leave. You get the same amount of leave if your partner has a multiple birth, such as twins and you must take your leave in one go.
You must give your employer 28 days’ notice if you want to change your start date. However, you do not have to give a precise date when you want to take leave, instead you can give a general time, such as the day of the birth or one week after the birth.
