FAIRBANKS, Alaska - It’s crunch time for the Fairbanks North Star Borough’s replacement of its 50-year-old animal shelter, but some design changes could still be in the offing.
Set for construction at the corner of Old Richardson Highway and Leasure Street, the new shelter’s estimated cost has about doubled and now sits at $33 million. When it came to the new shelter, testifiers, among them a veterinarian professional and local shelter operator, mostly questioned what they called a lack of public input in the scoping and design plans, which are scheduled to reach 65% by April.
“It appears to me that this is kind of being railroaded through a little bit,” Assemblymember Reeves-Ramos said.
