A new analysis by an international group of researchers has found evidence that COVID-19 originated from infected animals sold at a market in Wuhan.A French scientist uncovered genetic data uploaded by Chinese researchers to the global virology database GISAID. The data suggested raccoon dogs sold at the market could have been carrying the virus. The data disappeared from the database shortly after appearing, but the findings were presented to the World Health Organization on Tuesday.
Department of Energy changed their stance on the origins of COVID-19 to believing it leaked from a lab, and did not occur through natural transmission. Their change prompted large amounts of media coverage and debate. The analysis, which has not been peer-reviewed yet, was first reported on by The Atlantic . Several of the analysis’ authors penned an analysis with similar conclusions in February 2022 that was first shared with The New York Times .
