As we take our seats, the immersion continues: resonant music, a hint of mist, and a huge screen looping black-and-white footage of Berlant. An on-screen introduction to the show is a hilarious display of ego, issuing earnest instructions to the audience, incongruously flashing up Berlant’s IMDB page and agents’ contact details, before rolling into a tension-building countdown to Berlant’s grand entrance.
We’re going to journey through Berlant’s life, her dream of becoming an actor and her mysterious inability to cry, all via the dark secret that’s holding her back.. Both pieces pick apart similar tropes – the commodification of trauma, the one-woman show as a talent showcase for TV, the spectre of an influential industry figure in the audience causing our star to stumble.s total focus on Berlant is what makes the show work.
The show flashes through scenes by displaying the location on screen, while Berlant becomes the characters that comprise her autobiography. In a lesser artist’s hands these could risk feeling like filler, but Berlant’s writing never allows it. Wonderful moments of physical performance – a self-aware nightclub dance to Darude’s “Sandstorm”, an overwrought mime of rifling through a record collection – are so much fun to watch.
