Netflix unknowingly chose an inappropriate name for its Chupacabra movie, which presents significant issues for the streaming platform.
Netflix did not think things through when it chose the title for Chupa, but that mistake actually exposes a larger platform problem. The Netflix film follows a young boy who befriends a chupacabra. The animal is a folklore legend reportedly seen in Puerto Rico, but the film takes place in Mexico, where the young boy, Alex, finds the animal in his grandfather's shed. Unfortunately, Netflix shortening the film's name to Chupa was a terrible idea because it has an inappropriate meaning.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY The chupacabra gets its name from the Spanish words chupar, meaning "to suck," and cabra, which means goat. Unfortunately, chupar on its own can be confused for a sexual act, which does not work well with the theme of Netflix movie Chupa, especially because it is rated PG and aimed at children.
Curiously, the Netflix film did have people on board who may have noticed the title's faux pas, as Chupa was directed by Mexican filmmaker Jonas Cuaron. Perhaps those behind the movie simply did not see the issue. Social media is known for blowing things out of proportion, and it remains possible that no one associated with this innocent children's movie made the connection that Twitter did.
Why Netflix Needs To Avoid Future Translation Issues The Chupa issue can be viewed as disrespectful, since it comes across that the Netflix streaming service did not do enough due diligence regarding how the word translates. It is also no secret the film industry has a serious diversity issue, and if the reason Netflix approved the title is due to a lack of Spanish-speaking voices, that becomes a massive problem itself.
