U.S. secretary of state assures Israeli premier that American backing is overwhelming and bipartisan
TEL AVIV, Israel — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken for his ongoing travel to Israel on Thursday as the two addressed journalists in Tel Aviv.“President Biden was absolutely correct in calling this ‘sheer evil,’ ” Netanyahu said, referring to Hamas’s unprecedented attack Saturday on Israel.
Blinken said that he came before journalists “not just as secretary of state, but also a Jew” while recounting his own family’s history of surviving the Holocaust. “So prime minister, I understand, on a personal level, the harrowing echoes that Hamas’s massacres carry for Israeli Jews, as well as Jews everywhere,” Blinken said.Blinken pledged continued support from the U.S. for Israel and said that, even in a fractious U.S. Congress, that support remains overwhelmingly bipartisan.MarketWatch contributed.
