Sarina Wiegman's Lionesses are on the verge of making history - our experts give their verdict on England's chances
Sarina Wiegman's Lionesses are set to represent the nation in our first football World Cup final since 1966.
Sarah Clapson, Nottingham Forest writer for NottinghamshireLive: It’s got to be England reaching the final. An historic moment, an incredible achievement and done in style with that performance and result against Australia. England had to show resilience, and to do so when the majority of the crowd were against them was some going. That moment will live long in the memory - although hopefully there’s still an even better one to come.
JB: Lauren Hemp. She’s been a willing runner, never giving up on a lost cause, she carries the ball seriously well, and she has the magic touch in and around the box too. The disguised pass to set up Alessia Russo’s game-sealing third against Australia was sublime. LH: It has to be Jess Carter. We’ve been seeing glimpses of what she can do at Chelsea, and in the Arnold Clark Cup, but this tournament we’ve seen her blossom. With the absence of Leah Williamson, it was a question mark on what our backline would even look like - let alone cope - but Warwick’s own Jess Carter has stepped up when her Lionesses needed her.
Nottingham Forest Women have certainly seen increased interest in women’s football in recent years, particularly after the Euros. And I’ve no doubt they will benefit even more from this World Cup. JB: The numbers speak for themselves. Thirty-eight games and just one defeat is astonishingly good at any level of the game. Reaching back-to-back major tournament finals is incredible too. Tactically, Wiegman seems to get it spot on so often, while importantly, she also seems to have the complete trust of the players and has created an environment not only that produces results, but that the players want to be a part of.
