Neither aspirin nor omega-3 reduce heart failure in diabetes MedTwitter
BARCELONA — Contrary to previous findings, daily aspirin does not reduce the risk of heart failure hospitalisation or death, reveals an in-depth re-analysis of the UKASCEND, which involved almost 15,500 diabetes patients, suggested that aspirin reduced the risk of fatal and non-fatal heart failure by 16%, while omega-3 supplementation had no significant effect.
Dr Goonasekera replied that, "when you adjust for multiple comparisons", it is "unclear" whether these are "true benefits". They were randomised to aspirin 100-mg daily versus placebo, or omega-3 fatty acids 1-g daily versus placebo, and followed-up for an average of 7.4 years. The team was then able to link to hospitalisation and mortality data for more than 99% of participants.
This, she continued, "is an area where more evidence is needed, and the ASCEND trial was in a position to provide that". They then adjudicated whether they were indeed heart failure events via two methods: standard clinical adjudication; and a review of routinely collected data, looking for indications that a hospitalisation was due to heart failure. The original study reported 151 heart failure hospitalisations, alongside 89 heart failure deaths, of which 42 occurred without a prior hospitalisation.
In a separate poster, Dr Marion Mafham, also from the University of Oxford, and colleagues also looked into the ASCEND data to determine whether omega-3 fatty acids had any impact on dementia and cognitive impairment.
