The 74-year-old was championed for the vacant Ibrox hotseat but he admits his time for Ibrox has been and gone.

Evergreen Neil Warnock admits he adores Rangers, but warned anyone backing him with cash to be the next boss at the bookies is unlikely to see a return.

The 74-year-old was championed for the vacant Ibrox hotseat by his former Crystal Palace chairman Simon Jordan and is in no mood to retire after leaving Huddersfield Town months after saving them from almost certain relegation to League One. And now Warnock admits while Rangers has a place on his heart, he won't be the man to succeed Michael Beale with Kevin Muscat and Philippe Clement duking it out. Speaking to the Daily Mail, he quipped: "I wouldn't put any money on it.

But Warnock – who also holds a soft spot for Greenock Morton – admits the history and tradition of starring at the Blue Sea of Ibrox or city rivals Celtic is something he wished he checked off his lengthy managerial bucket list. He added: "I always fancied having a go at managing in Scotland, actually. I love the history at Rangers. I love walking up those steps. It feels a bit like it did walking into the Marble Halls at Highbury.

Warnock admits a trip north of the border still holds appeal but he claims he was once given the cold shoulder by Aberdeen. And the football lifer has revealed he was given a warning about what life was really like in the Granite City. He said: "I applied for the Aberdeen job once but I never got a reply. I had a player called Laurent D'Jaffo, who was with me at Bury and Sheffield United and he played at Aberdeen. I asked him what it was like. He said 'It's the only place I know, gaffer, where it's so cold the seagulls never land'."
