Police say the road has been used as a 'racetrack'

People living near a Nottinghamshire bypass say it has been a 'nightmare' in recent months due to car meets which police say have reportedly attracted more than 100 vehicles. The Sherwood Police team say it has been receiving reports for the last six weeks about people using the A617 Rainworth Bypass as a "racetrack".

The A617 bypass, with a speed limit of 70mph, is a dual carriageway which provides a major route for people heading into Mansfield. Some of the more recently built developments in Rainworth back right onto the bypass, including The Fields. One of those living there is 28-year-old Bonnie Cocker, who said: "We've been here for a year and I'd say that these meets have been happening for about three or four months, but it has got worse in the last six weeks.

One 30-year-old resident of The Fields, who did not want to be named but who has lived there for the last five years, said: "It has been a nightmare and they have been really loud. Another resident of The Fields said the car meets in recent weeks had in fact been "exciting", saying that she had been going in the lay-bys along the road to watch. But another resident, who has lived in the development for six years, said: "It's a busy bypass but it does generally get quieter in the evening, so we have noticed these car meets.
