A shorter window for transfer decisions would simplify the task coaches face in managing and reconstructing their rosters.

Nicole AuerbachThe NCAA is expected to vote to shorten the length of time its transfer portal windows are open each year, key administrators told. The Division I Council is expected to discuss and act on the issue when it meets in Indianapolis on Tuesday and Wednesday. Any changes to the length of transfer windows would be effective immediately.

“The goal is to really try to find some balance between allowing student-athletes an opportunity to evaluate their transfer opportunities but also providing some opportunity for coaches and their staff to focus on their current student-athletes — and to understand what their rosters are going to look like,” Tealer said. “At some point, coaches are going to need to have some period of time where they’re neither in-season nor fully recruiting.

Painter said he thinks a 30- or 45-day window would work well because it’s likely many players decide they want to transfer well before the window opens. He thinks it’s reasonable to shorten the timeframe they have to enter the portal; there is no deadline on deciding where their landing spot will be.

Football coaches can expect to have multiple distinct transfer portal windows; Lyke said it still makes sense to have a short window in the spring. It’s a challenge to figure out which dates work best in December and January when considering bowl games, College Football Playoff games, coaching changes, the December signing period and then winter academic semesters that begin in early January at many schools.
