After winning the 1996 lottery but not being able to pick first because of their expansion agreement — Allen Iverson went to Philadelphia while the Raptors chose Marcus Camby second over many, many excellent players — the Raptors jumped from fifth to first in 2006.
For now, let’s say everyone but Trent is back, although I think the Raptors could look to trade Siakam, especially in this scenario. The starting lineup would be VanVleet, Barnes, Anunoby, Siakam and … Poeltl. Wembanyama as the sixth man? OK, that seems impossible. I do think the Raptors bring back Poeltl to lighten the physical toll Wembanyama would take, making Siakam the likely odd man out with the return for him in a trade filling out the bench. VanVleet, Anunoby, Barnes, Wembanyama and Poeltl? That would be fun. Can you imagine the latter three on the back end of a zone defense? We are looking at Nathan Peterman’s pass completion percentages for the opponents.Once more, this entirely depends on who is on the roster.
The Raptors would gradually incorporate Wembanyama and have him focus on just a few skills at a time, given they have capable mid-career veterans at every position except for shooting guard. Wembanyama’s readiness would determine how much the Raptors would allow him to do in his rookie season.I’ll give it an 8. There are fit questions about this roster that Wembanyama doesn’t solve.
