Several Florida legislators called the plan to send National Guard members to state prisons a short-term band-aid to solve a crisis. More:
sets aside more than $31 million to “assist the FDC at facilities for nine months or until the FDC determines it no longer needs National Guard assistance.” It said they wouldn’t be used for the direct supervision of those incarcerated “except where such supervision occurs as a normal part of manning control stations or when required in an emergency situation pertaining to safety and security.”
Tallent told the commission that the current vacancy rate is 24.1%, and the department had 4,000 openings. Also backing the plan: the Florida Sheriffs Association, the Santa Rosa Correctional Institution and the Florida Corrections Chapter of the Florida Police Benevolent Association. “This is dangerous work, and so that pay needs to reflect the fact that this is dangerous work,” said Rep. Christopher Benjamin, D-Miami Gardens.
During the commission meeting, Jennison of Florida National Guard said they would still have “full capacity” to support Floridians in that event. “It is smart to have conversations about the resources that we are sending in our correctional system, and where it might be smart and effective to redirect those resources towards programs that actually help heal communities and prevent crime from happening in the first place,” Driskell said.
