Research shows breastfed babies have a lower risk of illnesses, including asthma, ear infections, diabetes, and respiratory problems.
The World Health Organization says universal breastfeeding could save about 820,000 infant lives yearly. According to “Pediatrics,” if 90 percent of families breastfed exclusively for six months, nearly 1,000 infant deaths could be prevented yearly.
“African American women have the lowest rates of breastfeeding compared with other racial and ethnic groups,” said Delia Hasberry, REACH program coordinator for The Wellness Coalition. “Minority women experience unique barriers to breastfeeding, including less acceptance at home or work and a lack of access to resources and support.”
Fewer non-Hispanic black infants are ever breastfed compared with non-Hispanic white infants and Hispanic infants .Mothers aged 20 to 29 years are less likely to ever breastfeed than mothers aged 30 .
