The Psyche spacecraft, which shares the name of the metal-rich asteroid, is almost as big as a tennis court.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla. - NASA launched the very first mission to explore a mysterious "metal world" in the outer asteroid belt.

The Psyche mission lifted off Friday morning from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. If successful, Psyche will be the first of many crafts aboard the SpaceX falcon heavy rocket.the Psyche spacecraft, which shares the name of the metal-rich asteroid, is almost as big as a tennis court. The craft will travel two-point-two billion miles over the next six years to the Psyche asteroid, which scientists believe to represent the core of an early planetary building block. According to researchers, the core may have been exposed due to violent collisions early in the solar system's formation.

The "metal world" is located in the outer part of the main asteroid belt between the orbits of Jupiter and Mars. Per NASA, the craft will send images to Earth as soon as it spots the asteroid, which scientists believe to be around 173 miles at its widest point. The organization hoped that examinations of the Psyche asteroid would show us how Earth's core, as well as the cores of other planets, came to be.
