On Tuesday, a federal judge ruled, in a preliminary injunction, that Indianapolis Public Schools must allow a 10-year-old transgender girl to play on a girls' softball team pending further litigation.
BLOOMINGTON — It challenges a state law, HEA 1041, which bans transgender girls from participating on K-12 girls' sports teams.
"There is statutory law, Title IX, that prohibits sex and gender discrimination. I expect that's the way most federal courts are going to see this issue," Sanders said. The preliminary injunction filed by a federal judge applies to this one student in Indianapolis. However, it's being closely watched by other families in similar situations.
The Clawson family has been very open about their trans daughter's experience. The reason? They want people to learn more about what it means to be transgender.""No one is trying to take anything away from anybody. We're just trying to make a more inclusive space for children. We're talking about children," Clawson said."Hopefully, the case can be expanded to other families.
