Naperville native Tamara Wilson will perform in “The Flying Dutchman” Sept. 23-Oct. 7 at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.
Russell Thomas started as Ernani and Tamara Wilson, formerly of Naperville, starred as Elvira in the 2022 production of “Ernani.”Soprano Tamara Wilson has landed the starring role of Senta in composer Richard Wagner’s masterpiece, “The Flying Dutchman,” with five performances offered Sept. 23-Oct. 7 at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.A celebrated and decorated opera singer, Wilson moved to Naperville at age 10 and graduated from Waubonsie Valley High School.
“If you’ve ever watched Looney Tunes or anything like that, you’ve heard some of the themes of the opera before,” she said. “It’s perfect for spooky season because it sounds like a haunted ship is coming. It’s really fun.” “It’s a story about betrayal, redemption and striving for some kind of salvation,” she said. “It’s one of better ones. This show isn’t done very often. I think they said it’s been like 20 years since it’s been done at the Lyric.”“The chorus sounds like a million bucks,” she said. “It’s a major wall of sound that gives you shivers.”
That led to her acceptance to the CCM in Cincinnati. Surprisingly, she found that the roles she was getting were limited. It was when she started doing voice competitions that things began to turn around for her. She was a finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, which led to her joining the Young Artist Program at the Houston Grand Opera in 2005.“Two years after that, I started professionally. It was like doors opened when they opened.”
