After three decades in Congress, Pelosi will not only be giving up her speaker’s gavel but also her leadership post – and all the history and harassment that came with it.
Perhaps Nancy Pelosi’s defining moment came on Jan. 6, when video captured her on the phone with the governor of Virginia calmly demanding that National Guard troops be sent in to protect the Capitol from insurrectionists, that the vote to certify Joe Biden’s election must carry on.
Pelosi, 82, will keep her House seat representing San Francisco. She made history as the first female Speaker of the House in 2007, spending four years in the role and then returned again 2019 during the Trump era. But she decided to give up her leadership post after her husband, Paul, was brutally attacked inside the couple’s San Francisco home and Republicans then captured the majority — barely — in the midterm elections with many campaigning on a “Fire Pelosi” agenda.
