State Assemblyman Ralph Caputo, 82, represents parts of Newark and other sections of Essex County.

, who has served two separate tenures in the New Jersey Legislature, nearly four decades apart, confirmed Tuesday night he’s set to end his career as a lawmaker.

That means Caputo would leave Trenton after a fascinating 56-year political journey, which includes 16 years in his latest tenure in the Legislature. Caputo first served in the Assembly as a Republican in the 1960s before spending 36 years away and then returning as a Democrat in 2007.his pending departure, citing unnamed sources. Caputo confirmed it in a phone interview with NJ Advance Media.Murphy is expected to nominate Caputo to replace Paul Juliano on the Horizon board.

When he was first elected to the Assembly in 1967, Caputo became the youngest member of the Legislature at the time. Five years later, he returned to the Assembly. Caputo and running mate Cleopatra Tucker to unseat Democratic incumbents Craig Stanley and Oadline Truitt in the party’s primary en route to winning the general election.
