A Paterson man was charged with bias intimidation after he entered a mosque, pushed a religious leader and demanded he stop praying, authorities said. Edward Wright, 57, is accused of entering the Islamic Congregation of North Jersey on Preakness Avenue on Dec. 23, and shoving “an assistant imam while demanding he discontinue the call for prayer,” according to Passaic County Prosecutor Camelia M. Valdes.
Wright was charged last week in a complaint/summons with fourth-degree bias intimidation and simple assault, a disorderly person’s offense.reported the prayer had been conducted on a loudspeaker and that Wright had been angered by the noise, telling congregants and mosque leaders he didn’t want to hear their prayers every day. He allegedly slapped a microphone out of the assistant imam’s hand and shoved him.The investigation is ongoing.
