What that means for Jersey toll road drivers is they’ll see more of what’s happened at almost all Port Authority Hudson River crossings — toll plazas and booths will be torn down and replaced with gantries containing overhead cameras and toll tag readers. That Authority’s Staten Island bridges, Holland Tunnel and George Washington Bridge collect tolls electronically.
Under that system, a camera takes a photo of a vehicles license plate and a bill for the toll is sent to the registered owner. The owner is given a certain time period to pay the toll without incurring a fee.
