No police are allowed within 100 feet of a polling place, AG says.
“The role of law enforcement officers in elections is limited, but we have zero tolerance for criminal acts of voter intimidation or interference,” Matt Platkin, who was named to the post by Gov. Phil Murphy earlier this month, said in a statement.signed the Democratic-sponsored bill into law after it passed mostly along party lines. It says both plain-clothed or uniformed police need to keep at least 100 feet from polling stations or drop boxes.
The New Jersey Democratic State Committee sued, alleging the task force targeted Black and Hispanic polling places. A subsequent consent decree barred the practice of police monitoring polling stations, but supporters of the new bill said that agreement had long since lapsed.
