We love a love story, especially when it's as unusual as the Shevlins
"A photo was projected on to a wall in a cool Shoreditch bar of a man holding a T-shirt with the number 37 displayed on the bag it was residing in. It wasn’t just any T-shirt – this was a garment I’d worn to sleep in for the last three nights, in a bid for it to absorb my smell and attract a mate.
This pheromone party in 2015 was something I’d decided to attend on a whim, after seeing it on the Design My Night website. The idea behind the event was that if you are attracted to someone’s pheromones then it increases the chances of you being a love match. Grinning, I went up to the handsome man, who I discovered was called Paul. He smiled and said it was his friend who’d organised the event called The Pheromone Party and he’d only stepped in at the last minute because they needed another man. So he didn’t actually wear his T-shirt for the three nights – maybe that’s why I didn’t pick him.
Our first date was unusual in that it lasted an entire week. Paul was only meant to come to visit for a few days, but we ended up getting along so well he stayed longer. It was like a romcom montage, spending our time at museums, going bowling and eating out at nice restaurants. The wedding was less than a year later. We didn’t want anything traditional so we had it at an old police station in my hometown, Sheffield, and decided to opt for a humanist wedding as I’m not religious. Paul’s family are, but he hadn’t been practising for a decade by the time he proposed. Our families respected our decision.
When we stood at the top of the aisle to say our vows, we also got to walk down memory lane and feel grateful for all the moments that had led us to this point. It was great getting to reminisce about how we met as we tied ourselves together for life. Of course The Pheromone Party featured, to the amusement of our 50 guests, who’d heard the story before. In a symbolic gesture, we quite literally tied our hands together with ribbon that we now have framed at our home.
