At first, it was awkward. Guests at Elizabeth’s table were instructed to not address her until spoken to, and the table was very quiet. The queen continued looking to Strauss, but the mayor’s exhausted head was deep in study with her notes. And the conversation continued. I commented on Prince Charles’s love of architecture and city planning, referring to his then recently published book:Elizabeth seemed pleased that her son’s endeavors were appreciated. “Charles is working on another book, this one concerning the role of architecture in offering one a sense of place. That seems so important in today’s chaotic world.”
