Musically, it was a great evening. Dramatically, not so much.
Opening the Dallas Opera’s 65th anniversary season, Saturday night’s performance of Verdi’swas one you’d be happy to have on a compact disc. The singing was very fine, and music director Emmanuel Villaume got elegant delicacies as well as sonic drama from the orchestra. In his last season as chorus director, Alexander Rom had the men’s chorus — only men inWhat the evening lacked was theatrical electricity from, and among, the dramatis personae.
The first thing we see is the court chorus, in grotesque masks right out of surrealist paintings, in a straight line all across the stage. Rigoletto , played by George Gagnidze, returns home to his daughter, Gilda, played by Madison Leonard, in the Dallas Opera’s performance of Rigoletto at the Winspear Opera House in Dallas.
