This spring, with a suite of four new exhibitions on view, MOCA is addressing the new imperative to promote diversity and equity while returning artistic decision-making largely to its own staff. The good news is that the results are pretty good, overall.

Controversies over exhibition programming and a sense of disconnectedness from Cleveland’s Black community resulted in the cancellation of two national touring exhibitions in 2020 and 2021, and the resignation in June 2020 of former director Jill Snyder. The troubles were part of a new moral climate that swept the arts after the coronavirus pandemic and Black Lives Matter protests that followed the police murder of George Floyd in 2020.
