He helped found Dallas’ Delahunty Gallery and once tracked down a renowned 1949 mural that had gone missing for years.

Smither discovered a wide range of folk artists, which morphed into a portfolio of expertise that led the parent company ofto hire him in an effort to locate the renowned 1949 mural by Dallas artist Perry Nichols, whichbuilding in 1971 and donated to the University of Texas. Smither unearthed it in an art building on campus in Austin and went on to supervise the restoration of the sprawling mural, which was 15-by-175 feet in size.

Judith Garrett Segura, the official historian for DallasNews Corporation since 1986, said the reason the piece went missing was because of an absence of formal paperwork betweenThe mural, Segura said, “depicts the founding of the company’s first newspaper in 1842 in Galveston. So, it starts in 1842 and then it shows various scenes in Texas history that come up to and end in 1885, with the founding ofin 1842.

Workers from Unified Fine Arts remove the murals from the TXCN building at the former Dallas Morning News headquarters downtown in 2017. The murals by nine artists, including Perry Nichols, were taken to the Briscoe Center for American History on the University of Texas at Austin campus.in 1986 and remained there until 2013, when the building was sold. The mural is now part of the collection of the Hamon Arts Library at Southern Methodist University.

In addition, Smither helped assemble an art collection for the company that included more than 300 works by Texas artists.
