Henry Houghton denies the the murder of 19-year-old Matthew Daulby and said he returned to a bar after trying to break up the brawl
A man accused of murder did not know his alleged victim had been stabbed because he was in a bar and attempted to kick one of his friends, a court was told. Matthew Daulby, 19, died after being stabbed during a mass street brawl shortly after midnight on July 29 2023 in Ormskirk.
Houghton, seen inside the bar at around 12.13am, approximately ten minutes after the incident, attempted to kick the unnamed man but he ended up kicking the man's girlfriend, said Mr Myerson. DS Derbyshire responded: "Yes I do" and when asked if it was "optimal" added: "I believe it was done right." Mr Myerson told the jury: "In the crown's case this is a plan to kill somebody so where in the interview is Houghton challenged about this, or given the opportunity to answer questions.
However, Mr Myerson drew the attention of the jury to Mr Daulby's contact with the man who cannot be named for legal reasons. Mr Myerson asked DS Greenwood: "You have two occasions where and Mr Daulby come into contact. Your preference is for the fatal blow to have been the second occasion, but you can't rule out the first."
Within minutes, arrangements were made to travel to Ormskirk leaving Mr Daulby's "fuming" girlfriend behind. She told the court: "They were all saying, 'what's happened?' It's not like Matthew to go out and cause dramas. He was a lover, not a fighter, but they were all saying 'we've got to go down.'" She continued that the boys were protective of their friend as he had his leg in a pot and wasn't in a position to defend himself.
